Yesterday just about everything went wrong.
I was schedule to shoot portraits of the Level 1-2 skaters with the Cherry City Derby Girls. This is a project I have been working on since April of 2009. For those who don’t know, the Cherry City Derby Girls are a flat track roller derby team based in Salem, Ore.
Most of my work has been with the skaters who started, as did the league, in 2009. Over the year and half the league has grown rapidly, with lots of new skaters raising up to the higher skill levels.
So to Sunday night. I got the the practice space, The Dust Bowl, and began setting things up. I hung a backdrop and begin setting up my backgrounds lights. Plugged into a socket, no power. Drat. Looked around for other outlets, plugged in, still no power. Okay, on to plan B.
Pulled out the battery operated strobes to use as my main light, attached to my light stand, plugged in the head, no power. Crap. Now I am really scrambling.
Pull out the other battery pack, plug in the head, power at last. Little sigh of relief. However, the low battery indicator is glowing red. Crap. The ready light is still blinking, so got to use it until is poops out. Grab a SB-24, place on a light stand, and I am finally ready to go.
Just a few of the girls stopped by to get photographed. The results were okay. The skaters just don’t pop like I had hoped. Luckily I will have another chance in a month.
